What is a wind turbine slip ring?

A wind turbine slip ring is a small electromechanical device, which transmits an electrical current from a stationary unit to a rotating structure.

Three main types of slip rings are used in wind turbines. Larger utility-scale wind turbines require two slip rings: a collector slip ring and a generator slip ring. Smaller, private wind turbines use only yaw slip rings. All three are completely different in terms of design and the challenges they face.
